Wm Duncan Pisgah’s shooting today. 15th Willie away to Dr to let him see his leg. 16th... sent Wm Duncan away to see how Adam was getting on with the sheep p.m. I got milk from Jas Dawson & am to get 17th Adam came this morning, Wm Duncan herding for him 20th ...washed horses’ legs & 2 stirks with McDougall’s dip... 22nd I at Rhynie got Dasey shod on 4 new shoes & 8 sharps Mary & Maggie Smith & I at Cinomatagraph in Grant’s hall. It was splendid... 24th Adam up from Glass last night.. 26th Mrs Shearer & Jim amongst peats in moss all day selecting dry ones...most of them ploughing... Wm Duncan holing fir to himself 27th .. Mrs Shearer & I took inover 2 loads of peats p.m. then she helped me to sort beasts 28th I very bad today just managed to sort beasts in the morniing had to go to bed Mrs Shearer sorted beasts. 29th Mrs Shearer came up & sorted beasts in the morning. Jas Reid went over for Wm Duncan. Wm Wilson came noon them taking in a rick. I very ill with pain in bowels. 30th ... William Wilson not able for his work so I advised him to go to the Aberdeen Infirmary. I paid him £3 for the time he had wrought he left p.m. I fearful pained all day took a dose of laudanum which eased the pain. February 4th ... Police up with Summons to Jas Dawson to appear in Aberdeen as a witness on Thursday. April 5th Sunday Black cow calved when Adam went into byre this morning twins cow one dead & bull one lived awhile till 10 p.m. two mosters of calves both black bull weighed 77lbs cow one 70lbs 7th Two ewes lambed today one dead cold stormy day. I sowed Reid’s waterproof coat on machine p.m. 11th I in bed all day with a sore back. Maggie Gordon buried today. 12th Black cow not well tonight I put daisey in trap & went to Rhynie for farrier left this 9.45p.m. in Rhynie 10.45 Farrier would not come out tonight 13th Monday Home from Rhynie by 1.30 a.m. gave cow a bottle linseed oil went to bed 4.30 a.m. up & off to Rhynie again 6.30 a.m. for Dr to Lizzie Reid. Had breakfast with Wm Smith. Farrier came to cow today. Elsie Mathieson & Lizzie both deliverd of a son today. Very stormy gave sheep neeps. Took in last straw rick p.m. 15th .... I very cripple... 16th Always snowing nothing can be done ... I very cripple with strained ankle. 20th Snowing Snowing nothing but snow & death 21st Always snowing Ewes lambing & leaving their lambs no milk & strong big lambs they are this snow has ruined them clean. Thrashed & gave some of them corn & bran. 22nd Adam & I busy amongst sheep & lambs allday a heartless job ruin staring us in the face at every hand. 24th Six lambs worried & taken away by dogs Since last night & Jas Dawson 2 from beside his house 25th I at Rhynie.. sent Dr up to George Shearer 26th a great slaughter amongst lambs. Since last night 15 or more taken away with dogs... and all so quietly done 30th Adam & I marked 29 ewes without lambs that has had lambs.... May 1st Adam casting drain & I at Auchmair Torney & Aldunie p.m. had Daisey in trap. Signed Register. Auchmair Torney Milton & Kirkton sowing corn today. 2nd ... Lizzie Reid at school p.m. 3rd Sunday ... Jane Reid & her Tarland Tailor at Session & MacMillan at Fit of Buck & christened their daughter Jessie Beattie. Adam Shearer & his wife at christening . Jessie Archibald back to Bodiebae received an invitation to Jas R. Lizzie & I at Huntly drove with Daisey all the way a fine day called & had dinner with Mr & Mrs Morrison... 28th Gordon McWilliam found by the search party hanging to a tree in Clashenrae he had been hanging there for a month & 2days. Mrs Dawson to Shenval to see her sister. July 1st This our fast day. Sheep finished 5 p.m. Cut lambs after supper. a fine day. 16th I at Elsie Scotts or Mrs McDonalds Shenvals funeral drove all the way to Dufftown rain all the afternoon. 21st ... Jim to Shands for feet to cradle .. Adam at hoe & Mrs shearer & I at Bracklachs clipping. p.m. Gordon McGregor round with horse paid him 5/- for the two mares price agreed on at first round . Signed his book. 23rd At Rhynie brought up James Reid from Bruntland to his grandparents at Fit of Buck. 29th I at Glass market . Paid Wm Duncan Edinglassie for neeps & pasture £20. September 9th I at Rhynie with Lizzie & child to get him vaxinated by Dr Turnbull... 12th Another bad day. Adam & Jim cleaning Daisey’s harness & shifting a fence. I cut 10 lambs a.m. Reid & I at fishing p.m. he 4 I 4 trouts. Jas Dawson at Rhynie for his new gig harness & Elsie Mathieson her son vaxinated. 15th ... a fearful frost this morning the corn & taties frosted Adam & I Stipped taties with a rope, Took in hay from 4 p.m. till 8 p.m. 24th Jas Dawson & I at Dufftown sales a lot of beasts at them not selling very well. Adam & Jim driving peats. harry Gordon left today. He photographed Daisey in trap & Lizzie & baby & Jim as driver. Jas Dawson & I had his mare in my machine. October 1st Carting peats a.m. & I building stack a.m. home 2 loads p.m. Stack finished & fenced 42 loads in new bit not very dry. Old Reid at Dufftown with Daisey in machine home drunk as usual. Very fine day. 2nd John Souter & I at Dufftown by 8 a.m. on our way to the Duke of Richmond & Gordon’s funeral drove from Dufftown & back a big funeral a fine day a most splendid drive lost John Souter coming home. Adam thatching hay rick. 4th My son William Souter Duncan baptised today by Rev, George McMillan com. Mrs Beattie, Mr & Mrs dawson, Jas & Helen Reid Adam Shearer wife & family wet cold day. 5th ..a lot of rain since last night burns big Adam at rapes awhile a.m. away to look for lambs Jim to Aldunie about my boots had Daisy riding . John Souter fishing down below the manse just got 3 each fine p.m. 6th I over at Howbog with John Souter’s top coat seeing his rams. Cleared water pipes a.m. .. 12th .... Adam at Howbog at night killing a ewe & took over a present to Annie Souter a new blanket brought inover John Souter’s rake. 14th Began cutting today. Cleared roads at Culwine a.m. Adam Jim & I took down reaper & cut with her p.m. Adam Jim & L. Mary lifting . a fine day but cold. Bodiebae cutting roads for a start. 15th a lot of rain since last night. I cut out Culwine by 12p.m. & broke reaper pole at last round . Ground so wet & wheels sinking . Adam Jim & L. Mary lifting a.m. Adam Jim & L. Mary & I lifting p.m. 17th ... Adam ...8lb syrup.. got binder pole mended at Howtown... loused cart at Powneed late before he was home. 18th Annie Smith & Jas Hunter proclaimed & also John Sheed & Jane Kellas . Old Reid & I at church My wife & I & baby at Howbog p.m. at tea & also Mrs Gordon Auchmair & Burns schoolmaster. 25th John Rose & I over at Rhynturk & saw the patent sheep dipper ... a right fine day Lizzie & loon over calling on Mr & Mrs Dawson her sister May husband & family at Fit of Buck. November 18th Dufftown feeing market Adam & I putting stones on the road at our gate quarrying & carting up blinding p.m. Reid helping us in with reaper to cots. Let out the rams today 153 sheep & 3 rams. I cut Dawson ‘s calf a big stirk. 20th Friday This thanksgiving day for the harvest . Reid & I at church Adam at to Kirkton for his goods from R. Murray... 30th Adam holding his term him & his wife & her son John away to Lumsden. Jim & I looking after beasts Harry Nicoll away to Rhynie with a sledge for bag of cake. December 1st Adam to Rhynie with sledge for bag of cake, pail of syrup & 4 bars of soap from Wm Smith. Jim at Howtown with Kate to get her shod. Adam got drunk & John Souter had to bring home the mare & sledge he at mill of Noth with corn for meal 35lb per bushel a great fall of snow since last night. 2nd Adam did not come up to his work today none of them put in an appearance I did not get to Wm Beattie’s funeral having to look after the beasts gave sheep sledgeful of neeps p.m. 3rd Adam did not come up today either ... Reid & I threshed ourselves. Mrs Shearer up today says Adam has a festered foot. 4th Adam today. Spoke to him about his conduct on Tuesday. He gave sheep neeps & sorted beasts. I over at Reekimlane spent the day had my dinner there then called on them all at the Gaugh had my tea with Nelly Smith & called at Bracklach & Bodiebae very frosty all day. 5th ... 28lb per bushel what came off Culwine 8th Adam & I at mill with 3 bags of corn for hash to dogs & hens had both mares Love in sledge & kate tracing... Elsie Mathieson visiting with her son. 10th ... Reid rabbiting at Bracklach Jim & I with him had Wm Beattie’s firret a bad worker... 22nd A strong fresh burns big Adam carting neeps a.m. ploughing p.m. All the folks & things left the Bracklach today, hens & all ... 23rd I at Rhynie had Daisey in machine up past mill of Lismore had down 11 white hares Reidssent 6 to Greenock & I 4 to Aberdeen to friends & one to William Smith . Adam ploughing lea all day. Reid shooting in Bracklach hill got 3 hares 25th Adam & I carting up neeps a.m. Adam ploughing lea p.m. & I with John Souter dipping his sheep at my trough. Reekimlane Bodiebae dipped at Bracklach. Very frosty all day. 26th I at Rhynie Market with Daisey in trap Mrs Shearer with me Jas Daawson with cart Elsie Mathieson & Jane Daun with him. John Souter down with his mother in cart. 28th Adam away to Tough to John Rose with 43 ewes 5 wedders 1 ram.. I herding rest & pulling neeps a.m. 29th I sorted beasts then to Auchmair with 102 sheep away with Alexr Gordon Reekimlane to winter ewes 94; wedders 6 rams 2. Reid hare hunting at Bracklach got nothing always frosty Adam home tonight. 30th Adam & I took in a rick & home a load of rashes a.m. winnowed some corn & thrashed p.m. Reid here hunting on Bracklach just shot one. John Souter & Alexr Clarke here tonight. |
