1st  Adam & I took home sledge & things from Culwine ford  a.m.  he to hill hare hunting p.m. ... Jas Reid & Jockie away with Bracklachs  Ewes 226 today very frosty

2nd ... Mrs Duncan  a still born child

6th  A fearful day of wind all day broke in cartshed door &  would have taken thatch off Adam’s house ... fresh today & waters big

12th Sunday ... Harry  Nicol away with his wife to the Infirmary to see if anything can be done to her eye. John Thomson met them at the Elrick

16th Adam got ram drowned in dam tonight

17th ... Adam & wife Jane McRobb & Lizzie Reid & I  at Xmas tree concert & ball tonight  a big turn out but a poor affair

19th Mrs  Ritchie Bodiebae delivered of a son  today  before   Mrs  Beattie  or the Dr  landed

20th ... I at road with 2.5 qrs corn  to J. Reid & Lizzie Reid’s kist ...

23rd ... Jane  Cameron  & Wm Nicoll to Aberdeen  Jane to Infirmary to get out her eye

28th Very bad day... Reid making besoms all day. I sold old clogs to Wm Nicoll for 4/-...

February

2nd Sunday  This is Candlemas day  it is wet & foul. I at Mrs Shearers  & Fit of Buck Reid sore head. Vis Harry Nicoll Mrs Shearer & sons & Lizzie Reid & her daughter

4th  This rent day I did not go.  I on Buck. Hugh Lumsden  young laird of Clova  discharged his rifle at my bitch so there was like to be a fight...

7th Mrs George Gordon of Elrick’s funeral , aged 63 years  very stiff road with the snow

11th  Did little but sort beasts  this is bannock night Adam  wife & family  Jas. Reid Lizzie Reid  & Jane Spence  at their bannocks p.m. then  Adam & I at Bracklach  at night at bannocks

14th Started early this morning  Jane Adam & I & the 2 sledges & went to Rhynie  with 6 qrs corn  & sold it to Jas Gordon butcher  for 19/- per qr  43 lb per bushel  & brought home wood for cartshed door from P Anderson  a fearful bad day

17th ... blistered  Kate’s leg tonight ...

19th ... schoolmaster’s wife very ill  has had a shock of paralysis

23rd... Vis  Wm  Nicoll, Lizzie Reid &  child ,Mrs Shearer & sons &  Jas  Dawson  very fine day

March

 4th ... Reid’s old ewe died when I was giving her gruel & cattle oil..

7th Adam to Auchmair for black colt

8th ... Adam sprained hand bridling colt noon... & Wm Beattie came up & bridled colt & I ploughed a few rounds ...

9th I had to sort beasts  Adam unable to do it with his hand. Jane & little Mary at church.

11th ploughing match  Long boards 1st Alexr McBain 2nd Hugh  Kellas 3rd Wm Gordon 4th Wm Taylor Short boards 1st George Gauld

12th ... I to Auchmair & pruned bushes &  let Peter see how to do...

16th  I at church also Lizzie & little Mary  & Jammie  vis Jas Dawson Jas Reid  a very fine day. Adam managed to sort beasts.

17th ... Eben Beattie up bidding us goodbye..

19th... I bought a new plough from Sellar  Huntly  2 wheels & plain culter  & skim culter for £3”15 if it pleased & if not back it goes

20th Adam & I working in mill a.m. I cutting out a hatch for  the taking up of corn on to loft  with the pulleys he ploughing  p.m.  & I sorting beasts

25th Jane McRobb over at the Bracklach feeing as housekeeper

26th ... to Gartly.. a fine day down about..

28th .. I got Mains shilt  went down the Burn of Craig in Search of neeps then to Rhynie & Clatt took 2 acres at Blairduff @ 2d per head per week shepherd & dog kept  had dinner at Parkyside & tea at Auchmenzies & Howbog home here 12 p.m. Adam sledging stones to mend road

31st Adma away with 188 of my sheep & 110 of John Souters to Blairduff to neeps..

April

1st  Tuesday I took 4 loads of neeps a.m.  into shed Lizzie Reid came inover  & helped us  to thrash p.m.

2nd ...I tried my new plough but it will not clean itself...

5th ....I went to bed at 11p.m. & left him (John Souter) & Jane sitting billing & cooing...

6th ... Adamm up seeing his wife last  night

10th... Wm Weir Sellars man from Huntly here looking at plough

11th Snow today  Jane & I took in a lea rick & her little Mary & I winnowed up corn & thrashed p.m.

21st Adam & John Souter Jnr away to Blairduff for left ewes... I harrowed worst bits in back park with Love...

25th ... I to Post office for grass seed with Love riding...

28th Adam harrowing old lea with Love...

May

1st I to Rhynie with Love in cart for nets & stakes ...A Gordon to Infirmary...

2nd ...some louds peals of thunder..

3rd ...  fearful bad day.Wm Murray Tolaphin here ridiing wanting  straw

5th John Sheed shoemaker here for straw gave him 60 wisps not paid

7th ...Wm Murray bought a rick gave him 12 wisps with him & Peter Simpson 32 wisps. Adam & Wm Beattie came home without the sheep  both got drunk & lost them. Peter Simpson  brought them home. Jockie rode to Whitehillock for 1lb nitre 6d

9th ... on Culwine for whins...Love mare served with Star of the East..

13th Jock & I to Tillyminnates neeps.  Left  Love at Merdrum & walked the rest.  I bought the pony 7 years old for £10 & Jock & James Smith rode it home ...

16th ... watching  Kate for foaling..

20th Kate foaled mare foal about 7 a.m....

26th  I at Rhynie feeing market riding on Dasey. Adam took in last of neeps  & fencing & preparing for going away tomorrow... I did not get a man nor hay. Home & thrashed & helped to pack Adam’s  things.

27th  Wm Beattie  John Souter Jr & I to Dufftown with Adam’s things , wife & family. Lizzie & Jock all the way with them ..

28th Jane McRobb left 5.15 a.m.  Nelly Reid here all day ... Lizzie & Jock came  tonight 11p.m.

30th ...got Love shod at Howtown..

31st ... Jockie  over for his own & Jane McRobbs kist a.m. & I took outover taties  to Reids & inover Lizzies kist

June

2nd  I over to Rhynie riding on Dasey  p.m. went up past Bogencloch to see & fee a man but he would not engage had no one but Alec looking after beasts...

3rd  Harry Nicoll came to me to work this morning...

4th  Bob wife & family here vis. p.m. Harry & I started to roll but had to stop for rain went to fishing I got nothing Harry & Bob did.

5th ... thunder storm then heaviest rain I have ever seen...

6th Harry to Redford with red cow but no bull there then he went to Milton & got her served

7th no entry

8th Sunday ... Jane Daun came & told me  a dog had worried 3 of my  lambs beside  her house . So I saw him at one myself & followed him  home & found him to be John Taylors Mill

9th Hills white with snow this morning Harry away to Aberdeen with his wife.  Lewie here for him.  Lewie Lizzie & I winnowed 7.5.qrs corn & thrashed. Another dog hunt at Bracklach. Dog of Gaugh shot.

10th ... let horses out to grass tonight... another of worried lambs died & I buried  it

13th  Friday ... Dufftown police here seing about sheep worrying.

14th  ...Isa Innes up filling chaff for herself...

18th ....Love served again tonight

19th ....Love served again this  morning

21st ... I at Lodge meeting Factor & Party  p.m. then over seeing new road

25th ... Reid & I dipped ewes & lambs p.m. in a fearful mess of kebs

28th ... I wrought in garden till 10 p.m.

29th Lizzie & Nelly Reid at church & I cooking dinner... a very fine day

July

2nd Fast day . Harry fishing & took 3.5 dozen trout  I at Church then to Auchmair riding on Dasey... Powneed Gaugh & Gordon Gaugh  working all day

5th  Saturday ... at clipping  Peter Simpson  Jas. Smith Jas. Reid Wm. Beattie Helen Reid Wm Gordon Jane Daun, Harry & I & Lizzie Reid clipping whhile a very fine day

7th Harry tirring moss

8th ... I cut hogg in sturdy had it on both sides brain wasted had to cut her throat  a.m. ... I feed Harry Nicoll for half year

12th Harry Lizzie & I at PicNic & games they were very good John Souter Jr first for both hammer & 56lb weight amongsy locals  I home by 9.30 p.m. a very fine day

17th  The  Highland Show in Aberdeen  a fearful rain in Aberdeen & when we came to Gartly it was starvation

26th  a fearful spate ... had to put horses  in to stable

28th  Jane Gordon Aldivalloch’s funeral she was aged 70 years

30th  Glass Market bought a fine roadster for £20 sold her for £24  then I bought  a yearling filly for £11-  2/6 back . Stayed at Belcherrie all night also Johnnie Smith

August

4th ... I over at Howbog at night & helped coffin my uncle

5th ... Love served Mac Gregor  paid him 2/- for a jump

6th...John Souter’s funeral p.m. he was 75 years he was laid between his mothersgrave  & little Willie’s  my brother’s  son..

9th... I yoked & drove Mrs  Shearer & family & John Reid’s wife & family  down to our coronation picnic and games p.m. John Reid Jas. Reid Jane Reid Jane Spince Lizzie Reid  Harry & his mother & daughter & I all at it a fine afternoon

11th no entry

12th ... Lizzie to hill to gather  averings p.m.  came home with half a cupful of trash...

14th  I at Dufftown with Love in cart, ddrove Mrs Shearer & family to Dufftown   & also Jessie Beattie there & back

16th  I at Howton for part of reaper  got Love shod  & took down a load of peats out  of Badnieman... Lizzie James & Harry hoeing. Engaged a chap James Stewart he called himself  to hoe & cut hay @ 1/6 per day stayed here all night

17th Sunday  A Police from Dufftown & one from Keith here & arrested a notorious  thief  Matthew Macquin ,  a chap about 18 or 20  years  of age he called  himself  Jas Stewart farm servant....

18th John Souter here for the loan of Nelly bitch to gather  his sheep. Harry to Howbog for bitch & sheep p.m.

22nd  Us all at John’s Fair, Wm Duncan walking, Jas Dawson & I riding, he Malby & I Dasey, went & came Kinny burn  & Harry went through Glenbucket, he sold his horse

25th ...p.m. set up taties with Love alone

26th  I at Mary Fair riding. Harry in bed all day with sore back

27th ...took out reaper & put  in readyness  noon  cleared  roads & started  reaper about  3 p.m.

September

8th  Monday  I at  Rhynie with Love in cart . Jane Reid  went down with me to get  her  child pocked .

10th ... Howtown Dasey  to get a shoe on  called at Mill of Lismore   got a good feed of berries . Harry setting  peats  awhile a.m. him & Jamie  pulling juniper  p.m.

15th  Home 2 loads juniper from Kinny burn a.m. riddling & carrying up sand & grouting  for cementing of little house . This is the day of Milton of Noth Pedegree Sale of cattle

18th Harry & I at Rhynie market he did not sell his cattle. riding on Dasey . She won the race home with Scott Milton & Mains of Elrick.

20th  Harry  & Jas gathering & binding  rashes

25th Wm Kellas & I carting  in Jane Daun’s   peats  Harry  building  stack a.m. Wm Beattie  helping him  p.m.

26th  ... John Souter helped us to turn a hay rick a.m.... dressed cattle  for ringworm  in a terrible  mess           

27th  ... dipped all my own & Fit of Buck’s  438 Alex Gordon Auchmair  helped  us  I cut  his hair  & he  mine .

29th  ...Harry pulling juniper...

October 

2nd ... I paid George Beverley for 2 pails sheep dip

4th  A fearful frost this morning   potatoes all frosted & I am afraid  most  of the corn

13th  Carted 8 loads of  peats and headed part of stack a.m. Harry & I started to  cut   corn p.m. in back  park . Took click to Jane Daun   with moon.  dressed  cattle  again.

23rd ... Jas Reid’s mother  buried  today  aged  80 years. I left Dufftown 3,30 p.m.

24th  Lodged  at Mrs  Keirs Temperance  Hotel  Perth very bad trade both at Swans & McDonalds & Frasers  I left Perth 4 p.m.  stoped in Aberdeen with Lizzie Cooper

November

3rd  A fine morning  made  a start to leading  just got in two loada  and had to stop for rain then Harry & I set up all  the stooks in the clean ground  a.m. & he set up lea p.m.  Stewart Auchensoram left with 8 gimmers. Reid at  Milton. Wm Beattie  leading  long after rain came  on.

5th ... I to torney for ripture belt

6th... John Sheed  caught  going  into Dufftown with 64 brace of grouse.

10th  I at Rhynie Dasey. Let Wm Smith see my hand he says it is blood poisoned he made a poultice & put on it ... took in a rick p.m. Jas Reid building Jane Daun  forking

11th .....p.m. for rupture belt for foal...

13th ... I in bed all day arm very sore

14th  A very fine quiet  day.  A. Gordon Auchmair   up building all day all in by 3 p.m.  in fair order. Sent with post for Dr to see my hand  he came about 4 p.m. & lanced  it  nothing  but  blood  came  out. Jane  Daun  7 hours.

30th Sunday I at church very cold & int but a few 11 counting the minister & all. Jas Law & Jane Gordon  proclaimed today

December

2nd Adam came tonight

3rd John Souter, Adam & I to Dufftown  for his Adam’s wife & things  took sledges to Ardwell & Inverharrach  got carts from there  a Devil of a job before we got home  in the dark  great  wreaths of snow above Powneed

5th The day of James  Law’s marriage . Reid going  post  for old Law.  Adam  & I to store p.m. for rest of his things so they are all here  now.

8th I took Dasey & rode to Edinglassie  & took all the pasture except one park of new grass @ £1- per 100 per week  shepherd & dogs kept.  Had my supper at  Belherrie played him 5 games of draughts  I won them all . Got Dasey sharped at Bridgend  paid  2/-  At Auchmair 9 p.m. Stoped there all night.

11th Willie & I at Rhynie ... Bought trap & harness  lamps  rug  & C  from Riddle for £8”15. Home 2 bags coals to Mrs Shearer;  to self  bag bran 6/3 2cwt Thorley cake  17/-  2 pails dip £1-.  Mary Giles left Bodiebae  today.

15th Harry Willie & I put reaper  into  cots

18th Jas Dawson to Rhynie for his new housekeeper Jessie Archibald

20th I at Rhynie market took trap home with Dasey

23rd ... Adam & Willie started to plough  on Culwine put in one feering a.m....

24th Willie  cutting  rashes  on Culwine

25th A fearful wind did a lot of damage  blew  big door of cot court  posts  & all

26th Mill of Noth for meal  one boll & one stone out of the qr but fine meal...

27th ... a right  fine day.

29th ... Jas Dawson off to Aberdeen to see Mary Giles , got a telegram that she was dying

30th ... Willie took down 2 loads of peats out of new stack to Mrs Shearer... I made  besom to Lizzie  tonight ... Adam to Auchmair  with sheep...

31st ... I made a lid to pot & a stand to my ink bottle  glued stained & varnished it at night. This is the night of the Christmas tree none of us at it  Willie down with Mrs Shearer Lizzie & I at home
