January 5th Friday Adam away to Dumeath to see if hill was let but it was... This the day ofWm Duncan of Pisgah’s shooting...

8th Sheep neeps & on to Dillet  took inover bedding to cots in sledge and thrashed  a.m.I to Auchmair  with sledge  p.m. & took home chimney & board for sledge from Jas Shand. Paid George Gordon for being with sheep 16/-

9th To Rhynie with Kate in sledge to get mare  sharped & took glass ball trap to smiddy to be strengthened... took to Troup part of Mrs Shearer’s sewing machine.

13th  ... neeped sheep at Bruntland... Diary & Mrs Shearers parts of machine came tonight from Wm Troup.

19th fresh today. Adam carting  out dung a.m.Sheep neeps him & I pulled neepd & gathered them into big heaps p.m. Mary paraffine 1 gallon unpaid Received  7/6 from her  for 1/2 cwt sugar which I brought  home to her some time ago; thrashed tonight.

29th  More snow & Dod casting out snow all day. I to Aldunie  with Kate  in sledge  more snow here than at Braeside  I at Jas Sheed for poles as guides through the Dillet

February 1st ... Great marriage  at Hillhead  Miss Isa Kellas to  Wm Gordon Aldivalloch..

3rd... I to Bracklach p.m.  & round by Whitehillock, Kirkton & Powneed... paid John sheed shoemaker 3/7.5  for mending boots & shot powder

15th I to Lumsden with Kate in sledge with stakes & nets  a very bad day snowing & drifting Adam & Reid to Rhynie with sheep came on a fearful night I stuck in brae of Blackhills  and had to leave sledge  in wreath stopped at Blackhills  all night  it almost defeat me to get there

27th ....threshed twice... I sorting things in mill & soldered 2 milk basins to Mrs Gordon Bracklach thrashed Reid at brod tonight.

March 7th Wednesday  Thrashed morning then Jock & I to Howtown with Kate in sledge loused there & walked to Rhynie. From Murray 1/2 boll  flour & 9 lbs bacon @ 7d per lb 5/3 collar stuffed 6: 3lb suet 1/6 11/2 loves 71.2 very bad roads  John Souter & Wm Beattie down too with sledges

16th Friday I pulled 4 sledgefuls of neeps... put belt on fanners & thrashed noon... very frosty  old snow carrying horse Liby tonight & Ploughmans ball  stayed  at home

19th ... Jane Daun here for birn of sheaves for her sheep. Robert Mackintosh  buried today aged 85 years I unable to go to his funeral

April 7th  Saturday Jas Beattie & I  first to poll  had Bracklachs sledge to Clarks then John Thomson drove us to 1.36 train. Helen & William Beattie & I called on Dr Gordon  & he examined both at Bensons Hotel  they both put up there  & I with Mrs Gordon

10th Tuesday ... I engaged Maggie Helen Kellas for housekeeper & to hoe turnips  & lift in harvest  wages £7

14th Adam started to plow old lea today  ... I had Jane Daun & Mary for shepherds let a lot of my sheep into Howbogs hill I home 80 hogs 6 awanting

18th Wednesday  Wm Beattie here riding for me 5.30 a.m. to a ewe in lambing I took lamb from her  then went to back hill with hoggs & wedders came home & took dinner & went back with shovel  & broke in snow bridges I very tired at night

30th  Monday Adam  harrowing lea a.m. harrowed up some neeps  & carted up 2 pits p.m. very cold foul day Wm Beattie sowed his first sowing today & Jas Dawson sowed his last of lea.

May 7th .... Wm Kellas’ Jess mare shot today.

8th  I at Mary Fair had Love riding... Adam & both Maries taking up neeps all day

11th ... All the Tenants  of Cabrach at Cabrach meeting Mr Factor(Mr Skinner). settling about their farms. Some of them more & some of them less rent. I am 8/- down. Very cold day.

19th  Reid & I working amongst sheep near all day & Adam dragged harrowed & opened ten dreels for taties & dunged 6 of them & Reid filled dung. Mrs Shearer  Mary & Nelly Reid cutting seed taties fine day Bracklach planting taties today too.

21st I at Rhynie market with Kate in gig drove Helen Reid down & back  Adam down too did not engage I cut a sturdy hogg to Thomson Reid looking after things.... Traction up with manure

23rd ...Engaged Adam  @ £27”10 & house

28th  ... Housekeeper Miss Maggie Helen  Kellas came tonight..

June 2nd  Saturday Adam & I gathered weeds awhile a.m. then he started links & grubber  & Mrs Shearer &  I gathering weeds  p.m.John Souter sowed first of his neeps tonight very warm day frosty morning thrashed. Adam started his moss tonight

7th  Adam  opening dreels, tink & I  gathering weeds  yavel ewe in hill died later . Little tink, Mary & I gathered weeds  then a big tink came at 3 p.m. 7 helped us till night...asked £1 a week & meat.

8th ...little tink & Jane Daun breaking dung a.m. Paid off tinks noon. Adam down dreels & sowed manure & Jane Daun carried it... Jane & I putting weds in dreels  Adam to Auchmair for Maggie’s kist

27th  Fast day I at Church cut Jane Daun’s lambs a.m.  & Elrick & Blackhills p.m. ... Maggie & her sister on top of Buck... Mary Rose delivered of a son between yesterday & today

July 7th Saturday wet morning started to hoe taties a/m. Adam Maggie & I at Picnic  p.m. cleared up a fine day Adam to Rhynie for Dr to Lizzie early in the mornning so she has got a daughter

10th Eben Innes & Adam in moss all day & I awhile a.m. I ran taties & hoed them & sowed manure  & set them up p.m. & to Bracklach with black cow to bullp.m. hoeing garden at night John Reid came  tonight engaged him to work @ 10/-per week  as long as I want him.

11th .. at Dufftown market  engaged a boy Wm Macman to term at £4 & Kate served with Lobban’s horse Dufftown  Eben Innes Jock Reid and Adam in moss all day finished peats very warm day

16th Adam Jock Mary Willie Maggie & I at hoeing rather wet a.m.Jock Souter clipping p.m.  I went over to see about sheep & Jock ordered me out. Then went to Blackhills for a ewe & lamb & a 2 year old wedder unclipped  & got a ewe & lamb & hogg unclipped at Howbog clipped them at night gave Mrs Shearer 3 fleeces

17th ....sent letter to Jock Souter telling him to send my wool & apologise for his conduct yesterday  So Mary & Johnnie came here tonight & apologise d & pleaded with me  to pass him this time very fine day & warm

August 1st Wednesday I at Glass market Adam & Willie finished hoeing of neeps  a very fine day

9th Adam drove me to Rhynie with Kate in gig then I got down to Gartly with Grant’s brake 9d then to Aberdeen 3/- train; at baths 6d

10th At Georgas Sangers Circus from 2.30.till 6 p.m. then Lizzie & I at theatre the Rich & Poor of London 4/-

11th ...at baths over in Tory ..saw Sangers horses swimming in the river Dee 4 of them nearly drowned

15th I at Dr Scott Riddel about my lip

16th I left Aberdeen with the 11.50a.m. train at Gartly at 1.27 p.m.

22nd  Wednesday  Adam & Willie road mending a.m. a fearful spate which washed down one end of Jas Dawson’s new house about 6 p.m.

September 10th Monday ball at Bracklach tonight

11th  John  Hay & I working at little  house he harling & I pointing... Maggie  Kellas came tonight

14th ... Adam  carting  peats to Jane Daun ... Forester here measured from porch to cistern 238 yards

15th  very fine day Adam & Willie driving Adams peats all day 18 loads  & I cementing & masoning in mill. Charles Emslie shot willfully by Dunn the other keeper  about 9 p.m. last night  & then shot himself about 9a.m. Emslie still alive but dangerously wounded

17th  ... Love very cripple

18th ... Willie pirling at road  John Dunn gamekeeper buried  today but Haig nor any of his folks there at funeral

25th Adam  carting peats all day has mine all home ... seeing Jas Beattie’s corpse aged 67 years

26th ... Morrison the farrier here seeing Love

October 3rd  ... started Adam Mary Maggie  & Willie to cut roads p.m. in clean ground 5 hours

November 12th  winnowed 2 qrs corn & I took it to mill very frosty morning Adam & Willie  tok in hewks, sheaves & rakings p.m. has 14 ricks & about 1 in mill ... at harvest home ball at Bracklach  tonight

19th  I at Balloch & feed woman Lizzie McWilliam..

27th Adam at Auchinleith for 3 sheep ... I fencing at Jane Daun’s had 225 sheep today fine afternoon

December 1st Saturday    ... Adam away to hold his term.... I feed Mary McWilliam  for nurse at Bracklach  £4”5

13th ... I at Maggie Helen  Kellas marriage about 5 p.m. about 20 at it I home about 12.30 p.m. very bad afternoon  wet & cold

17th ...  70 sheaves of broom to her (Mrs Shearer) house...

19th ... Received aneroid willed to me by the late Alexr Nicoll Coreen Cottage Auchindoir

24th   I to Bruntland for 80 sheaves broom ... paid Mrs Harper  for cutting 150 sheaves broom 6/1. Adam  thatching  the stable  .. I at Christmas Tree so was Lizzie

26th ... woman refused to do what she was bid so I paid her off Mrs Shearer came up & milked cows & did the work . Wm Kellas & I carting Reid’s broom from road went twice

27th ... Ross the sculpturer came noon & I went down to churchyard with him to show him what to do   Wm McWilliam  came back with his daughter Lizzie tonight so I gave her another chance upon conditions that  she do her work better & do whatever she is told

28th ... rubbed calf with stuff to cure its cary & ringworm
