1899

January  6th  Very frosty cold & stormy dinging on & drifting  I at Rhynie with cart  for sofa  & boll meal to Isa Innes from Mill of Milton. In Bank & heard the gramaphone,  a most wonderful thing. Jas Reid & George Gordon at a court  in Aberdeen . Settled case settled  out of court.

11th ... Powneed case  settled today .Jas Beattie lost

27th ... saw 14 deer in Kinny burn

February  2nd I at Auchmair with Love in sledge seeing old man, he is a good bit keener & more sensible knew me fine...

4th ....Johnie & I at Merdrum seeing Cockburn’s  queys; did not buy

9th .. old Auchmair very poorly & Lizzie  Smith taken down to Mill of Lismore today I am told.

10th ...old Auchmair died about 1 p.m.

14th Reid & Adam at Auchmair’s  funeral, I unable to attend

15th ... Jas Dawson a fine fire in hill. I am thinking he has burned some of mine & the paling posts

17th  Adam ploughing all day; he is very cripple .with a sore heel which he thinks is frosted

21st ...A. Souter away. I cut his hair; he is off for Canada about. the end of this week

22nd  I put Kate in gig & drove Adam down to Dr...

23rd  Adam in bed most of day poulticing heel. Jockie & I sorting beasts Always very hard frost.  Quey took ill in calving at noon;  sent for Jas Beattie 7.30 p.m. so him, Reid, Adam & I took the calf from her, a black bull calf; cow a kicker

March  3rd  ...Dr Grant here p.m. vaccinating Adam’s child & at Bodiebae drawing teeth from Jas Dawson. This the day of champion ploughing match at Tomnaven, 1st John Smith Invermarkie...

11th ...at school at night hearing debate between John Taylor & John Kellas. Subject: : is the present Government worthy of support? John Taylor  yes John Kellas no

14th ... Jockie & I on hill heather burning... when on top of Buck saw a great wood on fire

22nd .. always snowiing Reid at Whitehillock & Postoffice. I in bed had to cut off mustache & poultice  lip, very sore

April 1st  Adam to Aberdeen today to buy furniture  2 ewes lambed both black-faced

5th  I to Huntly engaging a woman; went & came with John Thomson fare 2/6...

10th ...Wm Duncan Bodiebae  buried still born child today

May 5th ... Jockie took Rover to Powneed & Beattie shot him. Poor old fellow I could not help shedding a few tears for him I am so sorry for him . He was a true & faithful friend & always ready at my hand.

11th ... Reid’s dreel next paling, then Adam’s then my 4 (potatoes)

16th I at Westerclova sale;  everything very dear bought 3yr old cow at the calving £16”10..

17th Adam & Jockie went away early  in the morning but she calved after they landed at Wester clova so had to come home  without  her

19th  Hills white with snow.. Adam, Jockie & Jamie to Westerclova with Love in cart for cow & calf. I at Dufftown with Kate in gig to let Dr Innes see my lip; he would not see me, saw Dr Grant, told to continue what I was doing;  musical entertainment at school at night

22nd Rhynie feeing market  today. Engaged Adam again at same wages £13- ... I at Dr  with lip very sore

13rd Helen Robertson died today at 1.15 a.m. ... Jockie at Tolaphin  p.m.

26th ... David Morren came & bought   red calf p.m. price £3”7”6

30th ... woman home tonight. Mary & the rest left

31st I at Kirsty Gordon’s funeral her age 86 years

June 7th Wednesday  I engaged  2 men John Webster & George Watson to gather weeds & C pm. from till Monday at 5/- each

10th Saturday ... John & George  has all the weeds gathered...

12th my 2 men left today... Dod Gordon, Peter Jopp & I at Bowmans land-measuring today, very warm day ;size of farm 29 acres3 roods 8 poles 18 yds

15th.. I at Dufftown at Dr Innes ...

17th ...thunder & lightning

19th Monday a lot of rain since last night..Adam looking for sheep I mending peat barrow George leveling midden then we washed cart Adam & I sowed & linked whin seed in hill Started to clip 3.30p.m. Jas., Nelly  & May Reid , Jane Daun & Adam, George & I.

21st Started mossing today. I out over awhile  helping mannie;  not much of a mosser in fact little use at anything... Love served with Prince Royal.

22nd Adam & Geordie  in moss all day

23rd ..Kate  ...got her shoes removed.. mannie  did nothing in moss a.m.

27th I washed gig & Annie cleaned harness... Love served with Black Duke

30th Adam to Rhynie  for Dr to Mary she delivered of a son ... Geordie & I putting up a new fence; he is a useless thing I had to do it all

July 1st Adam & Geordie in moss all day has just been 7 days in all

3rd Adam & May stared hoeing taties & did a dreel or two of neeps let Geordie away this morning

8th Saturday  a splendid picnic & it kept up a fine day

11th ... at school hearing Scott Skinner the great  fiddler

13th Mrs Jamieson’s  funeral she 77 years old

14th pulled  3 stones rhubarb tonight

15th took 14lbs rhubarb to Helen of Auchmair

22nd... May & Nelly Reid in hill gathering averings

27th  Adam & I at Gartly with two carts 7 bags of wool to Russel & Ramsden

29th I went up to hill a.m. stopped Haig’s men from putting up butts in near hill took down all their names & addresses... at Auchmair  paid  James Shand for new cart & Helen Reid for hoeing neeps

31st Monday I at splendid picnic on top of Buck p.m. & charming young ladies & the Rev. G. McMillan had fine music & singing when we came down

August 8th to Keith Show

10th I went to Macduff  very warm day got lodgings & dinner with Mrs Armour had a salt bath Jas Hay slept with me

11th met in with a lot of acquaintances  holidaying  like myself very warm day

12th Saturday Jas Dawson, Mary Giles, Helen Smith, Lizzie & Maggie Smith Jane Hardy, Miss Annie Cran, Joan Law  & a chap  Smart  & I all through Banff Museum...

14th Monday  the only blan k so far

15th A fearful warm day I at Bathhouse early in the morning got shaved & razzor trimmed  a.m. At Banff Bridge station had a long conversation

16th Us all at Duff  House Flower Show

17th Adam came with Kate in the gig to meet  me, got drunk at Rhynie ,came from Rhynie to Gartly at the mad gallop all the way; he was mad & did not know what he was doing  I am astonished he was not killed & the mare also

18th Adam very sorry for his conduct yesterday I have given him his last warning... Inspector of Police round about sheep stealing took copies of my sheep marks to try to find traces of my lost ones

21st Adam making ditch to keep  cot water  from getting into stroup or house water

22nd Isa Innes up for berries... constable  away with Wm Gordon

24th peats all home Adam 26 loads & we have 59 all home very dry  Wedders bad with maggots never seen them so bad

26th  Mrs Gordon & Mrs MacDonald  at Rhynie Flower show; I at Mr Haig’s supper enjoyed it well, home & loused 12p.m.

Sept 1st Annie at cranberries p.m.

2nd ... Jas Watt bid me £31”10 for colt but I would not sell

5th ... got Peter Gordon’s young bitch tonight  to try & learn her

7th .. & a gimmer of my own from Blackhills... was insulted by John Souter Senr who followed me along the road a good bit challenged me to fight & threatened to knock out my brains with a stone hammer;  he is a perfect disgrace

9th Adam & him (Alexr McIntosh) got a fine coup off the sledge  coming home & I got a fine laugh

11th Emslie & John Sharp bough t 2 year colt for £34

15th I at Aberdeen seeing Barnum & Baileys  Greatest  Show on Earth

November 14th ... at May Reid’s marriage  p.m. a memorable marriage . Bridegroom drunk & unable to stand. A very wet day.

16th.... I took Kate & out begging all day.... Engaged Mary Rose as housekeeper & to work out @ £6

27th ... Adam at steam mill at Powneed

29th Mary Rose my housekeeper came tonight. May Reid now Mrs Melvin here today

December 1st ....took Backsides pasture £6”10 till 28th March shepherd & dog kept

8th John Souter Jnr & George Gauld here  at night reported old Barron lost

9th Saturday  Adam away with Wm Duncan & rest of them in search of old Barron.  Found him in burn of Howbog at end of Roughward ...... George Gordon here  a.m. I bought his bitch & paid him  £1-

12th Thrashed  a.m. George away with sheep 198 & Bright dog & Nelly bitch. At Barron’s funeral he aged 78 years. Eben Innes up seeing his sweetheart tonight

14th  Adam & I at Rhynie , he to mill for meal home 2 bolls & bag of dist & sewing(?) machine 1/2 cwt sugar from R. Murray & 3 bottles  oil

18th ....I cleaning & trying to sort Mrs Shearer’s sewing machine

21st ...received 7 Christmas cards tonight

25th ...Nelly bitch ran off, frightened at mill going

27th ...gave a rabbit to little Jamie  for going for bitch yesterday

30th ...Adam away to his brother’s marriage,,,,,I  drove Jas Law(postman) to Fit of Buck & then to Culwine in sledge.
