January 3rd Monday I to Rhynie with mare & cart Lizzie & May Reid with me bought 2 cwt maize 11/-  2.5 st.flour, 2st.  stand bran

4th ...thrashed p.m.

5th Mrs Kellas of Torney’s   funeral, her age 49

6th a fine fresh day I to Blackhills riding p.m. measured pig & a rick of hay. James & I played 3 games

7th very frosty all day; engaged  a man to work @ 1/- per day, Charles Ferguson, started him to cart out dung p.m. I to Bodiebae

8th Man carting out dung a.m. started him to plough p.m. Jane spreading dung I held 2 rounds of the plough myself. Adam home with sheep a fine fresh day

10th Man ploughing a.m. Adam picking stones 2hrs p.m. & poling out a big one. Jas Smith, Jas Reid & I at Aldunie playing draughts, Mcconnachie, Sheed, Shewan & Rattray

11th Mannie ploughing a.m. he left at dinnertime,  could not manage the horse I bored a big stone and blew him to pieces. I received my braw new Draught  board tonight, Mary Reid carried it from Post office

12th  Adam & I carted  4 loads of stones to drain morning started plow at 9.30 a.m.I at Bodiebae measuring off field for ploughing match... Dr Forbes at Jockie & Jamie they have measles

 

13th ... killed  cripple wedder ...soldered Powi’s copper kettle

14th ...cut up wedder, girl of Blackhills for 1/2 stone of him  sent Jane to Auchmair with a bit of mutton

15th A great ploughing match at Bodiebae  16 ploughs 1st Hugh Kellas; 2nd  Wm. Gordon; 3rd Wm Smith 4th John Sharp ...

17th  fencing, ploughing, thrashing

18th ...put wedder under brine, gave 4 lbs to Reids, sold 4 lbs to Dod Gordon; a very fine day

17th Adam & Jane filling in drain with stones all day. I at Howtown;  got mare shod; 2 socks & culter laid & home dogs pot

20th Eben Innes & Jas Reid at Dufftown sales; had my gig & broke one of the lamps

22nd I filled up holes in henhouse  Miss MacDonald  came afternoon

24th  ...Adam away back with sheep to Auchindoir . Miss McDonald  left morning; mended gig lamp & made sieve  to Jas Dawson All ploughing today

25th left 6 a.m. for great ploughing match at Tallyhalum

28th  engaged John Horn to work @ 10/- per week started him to plough

29th Saturday  Jock ploughing all day Adam laid up in bed with sore throat received no papers today

February 3rd sent Adam away with sheep to Dumeath, Jock to Redford for Bright dog

8th  A little soft kind . Sent a white hare to our Bob, parcel & brown to Brander Brothers Huntly.  Bob Ligertwood kindly took them down. Jas Reid to Postoffice.

9th Fresh kind today. Chas. Emslie, Jas & Wm Beattie Wm Kellas & I & 4 dogs hare hunting on Buck & all the sport was only 3 white hares which I shot; the rest got nothing...

10th rode mare to Auchmair & spent the afternoon with Helen

11th Friday ...ploughing match at Milton 1st medal Wm Smith 2nd Hugh Kellas 3rd Gordon McBain

22nd  Jas McCombie buried today aged  79 years

24th ...bruised corn

25th...Jane left p.m. on one of her high gees....Mary Reid came & made super & milked cow

26th I at Rhynie with wedder in sledge....Jane home again before I got home

28th Monday... took in last straw rick p.m.

March 2nd Wednesday  I filling cartridges p.m. making rope traces for sledge

3rd  more snow in Lower Cabrach than here but none at Dumeath

10th Jas Reid & I at Aldunie with sledge, played 6 games

12th Saturday night of the brod here, Jas & John Sheed , Jas Reid & Jas Smith

14th took Wm Horn neeps 12 loads at 2/6  per load

23rd Jock at Whitehillocks with socks & culter

24th ...paid John Horn & let him away for 15.5 days £1”7”6  1/8 more than due

26th ...p.m. Reid working at Powneed for Eben Innes

29th... Traction  stuck  in brae of Blackhills with seed corn

30th Annie Kellas died today about 5 a.m. aged  64

April 1st I ordered from Troup today the Daily Free Press to receive it the day after date @ 3d per week

2nd Nelly Robertson very ill

1898 April 4th Monday ... Alexr Duncan here gave us a few songs

5th... I engaged Adam  at  £13-  a ? to cast peats & horse to drive them & a half dreel of tatties & let him at £3 of rent per year. Gave G.Gordon notice to leave

7th Adam ploughing a.m. I took mare & went to Blackhills for hoggs p.m. Adam & Jane took in last of hay; market hoggs Buck off horn 4am near & red paint on horn, put hogs & wedders to back hill a fine fresh day

9th Saturday I burned a bit  heather ...Fire Brigade in hill of Bracklach

11th Harvey here a.m. I paid him £5”4 for seed corn. All sowing corn today but myself. A fine day Lizzie Smith & Mary McBain at Bodiebae p.m.

14th  A very fine day Adam harrowing all day, I busy amongst Ewes lambing put a twin to a ewe that lost her lamb

15th dinging on rain all day

16th Jackie & I in garden transplanting leeks

17th Sunday Mrs Shearer delivered of a son today, Adam went for Dr early in the morning

20th ...to Huntly market  engaged a woman Mrs Milne

26th Adam finished ploughing clean ground a.m. rolling lea corn p.m. Wm & I took Kate & rode to Auchmair for hoggs p.m. & took 2 doz egs for Helen to set or hatch, a fine day

28th Rhubarb to Mrs Smith

29th A fearful bad day a perfect spate Adam & I amongst ewes all day had to change clothes 3 times

May 2nd A very fine day, Adam building dyke ploughing stibble

 4th ...dipped all yeld sheep

9th Adam  building  at  dyke, I at Powneed’s roup

10th I at Mary fair

11th snowing

12th  at Dumeath paying pasture & neeps ... cinematograph at Lower Cabrach School it very good Adam ditching

13th Friday  John Sheed’s roup at Ardwell

18th ... Wm., Mrs Shearer, Nellie Reid & I preparing seed (potato)

25th Morrison & son here & cut colt 5p.m. G. Gordon, G Reid, Adam, Wm  & I  helping. He cut 7 today. G. Gordon had Love carting away his furniture p.m. a cold  day

26th cross lamb died of woolball. Jane to Auchmair for hen & 20 chickens a.m. I shot a wood pigeon, killed & dressed a lamb & made a besom

27th George Gordon left little house today

28th Saturday Adam shifting wife & furniture into little house p.m. Wm & I working in garden Jane left 3.30p.m. Isa Innes up & made supper & milked cow

31st ...woman & girl came about 3p.m. with post Isa Innes left at night

June 1st Hills all white with snow Adam to Post office for woman’s trunk & took down Jane’s

4th Saturday Mrs Shearer at Rhynie

June16th  a cross lamb died today there was tape worm 86 feet long in it & the longest worm was 17.5 ft long

13th John Gordon Gaugh’s funeral  aged 84 years I rode through the moss on Kate

15th John Sheed’s funeral aged 87 years

20th  ...tarred cut lambs

24th Adam  mossing to himself & the wife with him...

July 2nd ...  Reid, Wm Kellas & Wm Wilson building bridge at Powneed today

6th St Sair’s Market day

9th I turned ill at picnic and was very bad before I got home unable to louse mare

14th ... Jane Daun & Adam clipping, George Reid taking & making up wool & I tarring and sharpening shears then about 5 p.m. Alexr Sheed , Alexr Gordon & Wm Duncan  came & we  we managed to finish by 6.15. a very fine day

16th Saturday Woman left by 7 a.m. went away without consent. Jane Daun  inover for her. I very ill today

18th Adam mossing all day Keithmore calling p.m. & Mrs Shearer & Jane Nicoll. Lizzie Reid laid up today

19th Adam mossing all day George Reid went for Dr to Lizzie then he examined Nelly Bell Reid, Adam’s bairn & me & at Helen Robertson. He says I  have bronchitis & influenza both

20th I some better  Adam been mossing 14.5 days very warm day

22nd Dr Grant 11am I very fevered he ordered my back to be blistered had to get Mrs shearer  to put them on, received  box of grapes & strawberries from Wm Cooper

23rd Woman Annie Milne & girl left 7 a.m. of her own accord I gave her her money as I was glad to get clear of her as she is the worst I ever encountered. Mrs Shearer is to try & manage

26th ...hoeing match  at  Kirkton  Glass Market  Bodiebae finished setting peats I still in bed

27th Bracklach family away to sea

30th Eben & Adam at hoe I tried to hoe a bit Good plants but fearful foul with yarr

August  1st ...hoeing finished tonight  = 11days of one hoe. Paid Eben he would not have but 4/- for the 3 days

3rd I working in garden, still very weak

5th ..girl came p.m. let her go again too long in coming

8th carrying liquid manure from cots to garden Wm Kellas & Harry driving Jane Daun’s peats

9th ..I working a while at cots pulling dockings

11th... in Aberdeen by 10a.m. Wm, Lizzie, Mary & 3 children & I went for 4 hours sail in White Queen 5p.m. to 9p.m. All of us very sick except Wm ,very rough. I got bottom of stomach proper

12th Wm & I at Bathing Station a.m. calling on Seedsman  & through Ben Reid & Co works a splendid sight very warm day

18th I left Aberdeen at 8.5 a.m. home by 2p.m.

19th ...Mains(?) Isa & boy took away her kist from little house

20th Adam & Lizzie Reid at hoe all day

23rd... Jas Reid home his peats today had a horse from Bracklach & one from Wm Kellas. Wm Kellas turned his cart in the moss...

26th Sandy Souter left today past Cutticks nest... I pulling berries in garden

27th I at flower show in Rhynie

29th at Wm Gordon’s funeral his age 65 years

30th at Mary Fair sold cross lambs 41 to Peter Cowie 2 16/6.

September 2nd ...Alexr Souter went home with Lizzie Reid & had tea with her alone

5th Adam driving peats 10 loads  building stack very warm day. Charles Cow & Gordon Gauld passed

6th Adam driving peats 10 loads  building stack very warm day a.m. at top of Buck with Mr & Mrs Wakingshaw & 3 daughters & a Miss Petrie & John Sheed left this between 5 & 6 p.m too much haze for seeing far

9th ... Adam  pulling dockings I sorting road & bridges to peat moss p.m.

13th... Adam carting peats & helping me to put on a new dip can on chimney & sweeped the vint

15th  Adam & I at Rhynie Market with Stirk & calf sold stirk for £11”12”6

at Barflatt  seeing  reaper

Jas sold his 2 year old stotts at £13”10

17th Saturday I to Comisty ...country looking very well  some of them leading

19th .. Bracklach, Bodiebae, Howbog, both Powneeds, Whitehillock, Milton & Torney begun the harvest

21st ... yoked Kate in cart for first time at Dufftown for lime 2 bolls on her & 2 bolls on Love; she behaved very well; corn very ripe about Dufftown

October 1st ... Dr Grant here seeing Adam’s child

2nd...Adam at Rhynie for druggs to his child, riding on Kate

December 25th  Reid, Adam, Jockie & I at church a very fine day Jane Reid not well.
