March 22 Friday

...Mother not well Isa Innes up & milked cow, her brother William died

March 23rd... Lizzie Reid inover a while I milked cow myself

March 25th At Wm Innes funeral, he 70

30th Sent for Dr for Mother, no better. Jane Daun in asking for Mother brought up loaf from Souter

April 1st Monday At Post Office with Love & Jock for drugs for Mother

4th Lizzie Reid at Aldunie

5th Mother very ill this morning Sent with Post for Dr. She died at 1.15 p.m. Sensible to the last. Isa & Maggie Innes laid her out. got big Findlater to measure her & help to  carry her to room. James Smith here tonight

8th Monday

Helen of Auchmair came up p.m. stopping all night. Mary & Maggie Smith, Mrs & Betty Reid, Mrs Gordon, Mrs Beattie , Jane Nicoll & some bairns here all to see Mothers corpse; very cold & stormy pm she aged 74 years

9th  funeral

24th Wednesday

Very fine day Sandy ploughing am finished broke it in p.m. reaady for sowingwinnowed 1.1/2 qr new corn for seed & put it out on the land. Jock Souter dipping all his sheep. Reid pruning berrie bushes at Bracklach

14th Tuesday ...2  dreels next to corn of blue hearts, 2  next champions and one dreel of Wm Kellas

16th .. a terrible cold day and snow

21st a great party at the Bracklach tonight

22nd Wednesday Sandy to store a.m. for 4 bags manure and Lizzie Reid’s trunk

23rd ... this the last round of Thomson with Mitchell’s cart

25th Sandy started to dreel had to stop himhe making a poor job. Nelly & Lizzie Reid planted a dreel of taties next neeps a.m....I  let House to Peter Stewart for  £2”10

 27th I at Rhynie feeing  market feed Alexr Kelman his wages £14”5

28th Dr Galloway up at Bodiebae at John Robertson

June 10th  Mannie engaged for a week at 9/-  John Robertson died at 5p.m. Took inover Mrs Stewart’s flitting with Jock horse mare Love foaled tonight some before 12p.m.

12th Mannie & I fencing at blue craigs Bracklach bidding to J Robertson’s funeral

13th Jim at fence a.m. but did nothing, cut some grass for mare p.m. that was all he did

14th ... I did not go to Harry Nicoll’s marriage Dr Grant here seeing Miss Reid & Peter Stewart

16th Sunday I at church & was thrown by Jock horse at end of Culwine but was able to preceed to church but was very sore indeed stinking pride would not let Nelly, Lizzie nor Jane Reid open the Styles for me but William Nicoll did it coming home.

17th Monday my back hip and neck very sore today with my throw yesterday unable to move. mannie cleaning ditch at back of stack a.m. put him to mend road p.m. but he failed to do anything

18th a very wet day Mannie cleaning harness and cutting meat for beasts but did very little at that

19th very wet this morning my man would not get up. I paid him and let him go.

20th ... rode to Aldunie to see the 6 cattle that was killed yesterday with lightning

23rd Sunday Dr Galloway at Peter Stewart p.m. he took a look at Jock’s side Mary & Jane at Johnnie Anderson’s lecture on China

24th Monday clipped all the sheep today, at it J Reid,A Gordon, J Law, Wm Gordon, J. Beattie, Jane Daun, Lizzie & Jane Reid & Mrs Gauld & her sons James & Willie I engaged Jim to wheel peats @ 3/- per week & a chap  Adam  Shearer came in about & helped us.

25th engaged  Adam  Shearer for a month

26th came on a terrible night of thunder & lightning

27th ...came on a terrible spate & burns came down big

29th  ..gave Mains Willie shears to clip his sheep

30th Peter Stewart died about 12 noon aged 26 years

July 2nd .. I up seeing corpse

8th took home 16 loads peats

10th  Adam , Lizzie & Mary Reid at hoe a.m. I in garden  Adam  ran all the neeps

13th  Adam  & Mary at hoe all day I at picnic pm. Mains Willie let Jock run off.

22nd I making mole traps & setting them. Maggie up with young cat a perfect beauty

27th Saturday very wet all day Reid & I at fishing  he took 11 & I took a dozen &7 and did not fish near so far

30th Tuesday A Gordon & I yoked his horse into gig & went to Glass Market

August 1st Cabrach market day

3rd Saturday picnic at Fit of Buck

23rd Friday St. John’s fair

24th  Adam  at Belna boddach for lambs. I drew a teeth to James Reid

27th Tuesday I at Mary Fair His Grace the Duke of Richmond callin on his tenants in Cabrach today

29th ball at Lodge

31st  Adam  & Mary turning peats. I at Gartly with Jock & horse hoe & arm chair to be mended at Howtown

September 2nd Monday  Adam  thrashing hay

6th  Adam  & I putting iron sheets on cartshed

9th came on terrible night of thunder & lightning

12th  Adam  riddling grass seed, killed & skinned wedder that was ill with foot rot

13th driving peats all day 9 loads.  Adam  went home with Jane Reid between 8 & 9 o’clock & he declairs he took her maidenhead, and it must have been a stiff job for they were a long time at it.

September 15th Sunday  Adam  in hill Mary at Church John Kellas post came from Church with Mary Souter then after dinner they went up to the craigs and had a long lie at the back of a big stone

16th Jane Daun has got hers (peats) home tonight, 2 carts driving, Harry building her stack. We have home 44 loads, very fine day

26th I feed  Adam  today for winter

27th a terrible hot day

October 2nd Snow and very cold all day.  Adam  in hill looking for sturdy wedder but did not get it

5th Saturday ...Bodiebae took in a rick by the light of the moon very fine night

6th  Adam  in far hill brought home sturdy wedder. I saw nothing but the skin of him beside the barn next morning dogs had eaten him

18th Cabrach market fine day

23rd ...a lot more snow

30th Lizzie Reid home from her harvest

November 1st sturdy ewe died Wm Gauld away home. Jane Reid to post. I still in bed very sore back.

2nd.  Adam  skinned sturdy ewe. A Gordon & Donald Day shooting grouse among Bodiebae stooks.

6th Thrashed. ..could have thrashed all day for water burns very big.

7th  Adam  thatching ricks

8th Friday taking up potaties.  Adam  & Mary graping, Lizzie Reid & Jackie Jamieson gathering...I carted up potatoes, put a load into cellar.

23rd Thanks giving for a good harvest

December 2nd Lumsden Market  Adam  did not come home.

3rd  Adam  came home with a blue eye & a swollen cheek.

10th I down at Gartly 8am in Aberdeen 9.55 just 50 minutes in going from Gartly to Aberdeen. Got a very bad job for sheep. Had my tea with Mr Park & wife & at a great affair at John Duncan’s church at night

30th I went over & weighed Bodiebae’s pig 10st 12lb

31st hares, rabbits and Bracklach &I playing 11games, he 2 wins, 1 draw I 8 wins1895
